P. H. Sheridan. [Portrait miniature of General Phillip Sheridan.]
Ca. 1865. Watercolor on ivory, sight size 3.625” x 2.25”, signed “Kramer” just above shoulder at right and titled “Sheridan” in block letters below the subject; in carved China trade hardwood frame bearing mounted plaque reading “208 P. H. Sheridan / Peter Kramer”. An excellent portrait miniature of General Phillip Sheridan in uniform by an artist renowned for his portraits of Civil War Generals as well as other luminaries of the second half of the nineteenth century. Painter and lithographer Peter Kramer (1823–1907) was born in Zweibrücken, Germany on July 24th, 1823 and immigrated to New York aboard the Hendrik Hudson in October of 1847. He settled in Philadelphia, where he was active from about 1848 to about 1865, working with lithographers Peter Duval, Thomas Sinclair, L. N. Rosenthal and Edward Herline. His portrait work appears to date from the end of the Civil War and later, and was probably one of his main sources of income during the latter part of his career. Among the other Civil War commanders whose portraits he painted are Generals William Tecumseh Sherman, John Dix, James McPherson, George Thomas, John Fremont, and others, including the commander in chief himself, Abraham Lincoln.
