New York: E. A. White Organization, Inc., [1927]. Illustrated folding brochure, 9” x 6”, unfolding to 18” x 24”, with 2 maps, 7.25” x 10.5” and 2.5” x 3.375”. Same content is printed on both sides of the sheet; one side has red overprinting. CONDITION: Very good, wear extremities, occasional light soiling.

A rare, amply illustrated folding brochure promoting a 1920s real estate development near Babylon, Long Island.

Forget Brooklyn—this pamphlet, published by the E. A. White real estate organization, promotes its latest shoreland development near Babylon, Long Island. “No other suburban area of New York has more to offer…in easy accessibility, healthful climate and opportunity for every sort of land and water sport.” The illustrations show the natural beauties surrounding Venetian Shores (“Santapogue River from the Merrick Road,” “Private Bathing Beach on the Great South Bay,” etc.); “Bungalows under Construction” in a variety of architectural styles; and views of Babylon—its main street, train station, court house, new high school, Motorized Fire Department,” and more.

The larger map shows the area from the Hudson River in the west to Sayville and Lake Ronkonkoma in the east, and the Atlantic Ocean in the south to the Long Island Sound in the north. Red overprinting boldly locates “Venetian Shores” just southwest of Babylon and a stone’s throw from the Lindenhurst station of the Long Island Railroad, and concentric red rings emanate from Penn Station at ten-mile intervals. The smaller map, nestled among the illustrations and below several paragraphs describing Venetian Shores, Babylon, and the advantages of Long Island in general, details the development itself. Red circles highlight the Lindenhurst and Babylon railroad stations and labels within the red-outlined Venetian Shores locate amenities like “Private Beach, shallow water for children,” “Playground Island,” “Private Boat Landing,” “Private Bathing Beach,” and so on.
